A boat accident at Egbu village in the Patigi local government area of Kwara state is said to have claimed the lives of about 100 people, including a father and his four children.
The governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has commiserated with the residents of Patigi over the tragic news of a boat accident in which many persons are still missing and others are believed to have died.
According to reliable sources, the tragedy occurred on Monday when the deceased was travelling back from a wedding in the nearby Niger State village of Egboti.


According to what is currently known, the majority of the passengers were not donning any safety equipment, such as life vests, he said. Funeral services have been held for at least 60 of the victims of the disaster.
Additionally, it was reported that the boat capsized after being carried downstream by river waves and colliding with a tree.
Since no fewer than 50 bodies have been discovered following the event, the entire Egboti community has been plunged into sadness.
According to local sources who spoke to our correspondent, the dead left Kpada village to attend the wedding in Egboti village.
According to sources, the boat capsized at Egbu village while carrying around 300 people on their way back from the location of the wedding celebration.
According to those who provided information on the occurrence, 69 people from the villages of Egbu, Gakpan, and Kpada in the state's Patigi local government district perished.
When asked about the event, Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, the state police command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said that the state police command had sent the Patigi local government area's Divisional Police Officer to investigate further.

"To the residents of these communities and those from other states, the Governor extends his sincere sympathies. He begs the All-Powerful Allah to grant the victims' souls rest." The Governor is still keeping an eye on the rescue operations that have been underway since Monday night to find any potential survivors. His Royal Highness Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II and other local government officials deserve praise for their quick thinking in trying to save as many persons as they could who could have survived the accident.
Another source claims that a boat also sank on the Niger in the same region in May 2021. In that accident, as many as 160 individuals perished.
