FG declares June 12 a public holiday for Democracy Day
In commemoration of this year's Democracy Day, the Federal Government has declared Monday, June 12, 2023, a public holiday.
June 12 was declared democracy day by the former President Muhammadu Buhari administration to celebrate the late Chief MKO Abiola’s victory in the presidential election of June 12, 1993.
The June 12, 1993 election was adjourned the most free and fair poll in the country since her independence.
Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, announced on behalf of the Federal Government on Thursday, June 8th in Abuja.
In her words: "Nigeria's democratic journey has seen stormy and smooth sailing, but Nigerians, its institutions, and above all, their government, have remained steadfast on democratic principles."
“ We invite Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to take advantage of this memorable occasion to honour the progress made, celebrate the accomplishments and look forward to a better future."
“My sincere wishes go out to all Nigerians on this day of celebration."
