Many people have relied heavily on the use of bleaching cream. Some use partial bleaching cream while claiming it is not to bleach them.

This use of bleaching cream applies to younger women and a few men in Nigeria.
Even though there are no statistics analytics to show the percentage of women engaged in bleaching their skin in Nigeria, experts have agreed that there is a rise in skin bleaching even among men in the country.

The Director General of NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has deprecated the high rate of skin bleaching among Nigerians during her opening speech at the South-South media sensitization on bleaching cream in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Nigeria.

At the media sensitization gathering, Prof Adeyeye noted that bleaching have become a national health emergency following the 2018 WHO study.
The WHO (World Health Organization) in 2018 study revealed that 77% of Nigerian women uses of skin bleaching cream, which was the highest in Africa, 35% in South Africa, compared to 59% of women in Togo, and 27% of women in Senegal.
With these statistics shown, you can see the peril bleaching cream have caused in Nigeria. And this has become a national health emergency that requires a multifaceted and regulatory approach. He also made a refference to it this way during his speech.

While underscoring the need to take stringent steps to stem the use of bleaching cream in the country, she listed some harmful effects of bleaching cream to include cancer, damage to vital organs of the body, wrinkles, and prolonged healing of wounds, to mention a few.

The Director General of NAFDAC states that This sensitization workshop is a training program with the great expectation that participants will assume the role of the champions in the vanguards of the campaign against the use of bleaching cream. during his speech.

Representatives of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Customs, operators of supermarkets, and cosmetic dealers were present at the workshop training in Port Harcourt.
