Nollywood celebrates Funke Akindele’s "A Tribe Called Judah" image

Funke Akindele’s latest movie “A Tribe Called Judah,” has set a new record, becoming the first Nigerian movie to gross N1 billion in ticket sales 20 days after its release at the box office.
This action-packed comedy, featuring a stellar cast including Funke Akindele, Timini Egbuson, Jide Kene Achufusi, Uzee Usman, Tobi Makinde, and Olumide Oworu, revolves around a family embarking on a journey to rob a luxury furniture store, only to encounter armed robbers already inside the mall.
Distributed nationwide and across West Africa by Film One Entertainment, the big-screen spectacle commenced its theatrical run on December 15, 2023, surpassing the previous record theatre ticket numbers of Sugar Rush and King amassing 231,053 admissions with a staggering N1.02 billion in gross earnings.


Announcing during the week, Mr. Kene Okwuosa, the Group CEO of Film House Group, said “We are witnessing a golden era for Nigerian cinema, with Funke Akindele’s "A Tribe Called Judah" reaching the 1 billion Naira mark. The film premiered on December 15, 2023, across cinemas nationwide and kick-started with a total of ¦ 113.3 million, which made it the highest-grossing Nollywood opening weekend for the year.
“2023 English West Africa operated 95 cinemas with321 screens (Out of which Ghana as at 31st December had four cinemas with 18 screens. Nigeria as at 31st December, 2023 had 91 cinemas and 303 screens. “A Tribe Called Judah” at maximum wide release was in 71 cinemas. (A lot of cinemas here are still not equipped well to show major titles as well as with adequate anti-piracy capabilities).Yet the title still pulled in N925m as of 2nd January 2024,” Okwuosa wrote on Instagram.
Since the announcement, Nollywood practitioners have been celebrating the milestone in their different social media platforms.
