Delta State Police Command has paraded 67 gay suspects, arrested at an alleged gay wedding in a hotel in the Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
The state Police spokesman, Bright Edafe, said they would be prosecuted in line with laws related to anti-gay issues.
He said about 100 of them were arrested but at the end of the profiling, the number was scaled down to 67.
“We arrested about a hundred of them but after investigation the number of the suspects dropped to 67. They will be arraigned in court in line with the laws of the land,” he said.
An invitation card to the party where the suspected gays were arrested sighted by Vanguard simply read: “All white party/award nite. Dress code white and white. 1k gate fee, table for four 5k. Date August 26, 2023.”
The police image maker also warned youths to desist from acts running against the laws of the land.
He also advised those into criminal activities in Warri, Uvwie and other parts of the state to shun such acts, saying the command was determined to smoke them out.
“The command is ever ready to smoke out criminal elements in Warri, Uvwie and other parts of the state. I urge all youths on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, to be law-abiding. Shun every temptation to go into crime because if you are caught, the laws will apply,” he said.

The Police in Delta State yesterday said they have detained at least 67 people celebrating a gay wedding, in one of the country’s largest arrests targeting outlawed homosexuality.
The “gay suspects” were arrested in southern Delta state’s Ekpan town at about 2 a.m. on Monday at an event where two of them were wedded, state police spokesman Bright Edafe told reporters, adding that homosexuality “will never be tolerated” in Nigeria.
The Nigerian law banning gay marriage, punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and same-sex “amorous relationships”, prompted an international outcry when it came into force under former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
But the law is also supported by many in what remains a conservative country. More than 30 African countries already ban same-sex relationships and arrests of gay people are common in Nigeria.
Police stormed a hotel in Ekpan where the gay wedding was being held and initially arrested 200 people, Edafe told reporters. Later, 67 of them were detained after initial investigations, he said.
“The amazing part of it was that we saw two suspects, and there is a video recording where they were performing their wedding ceremony,” he said. “We are in Africa, and we are in Nigeria. We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture,” Edafe spoke at a police station where the suspects were being paraded.
He reiterated that police officers in Nigeria “cannot fold their hands” and watch gay people openly express their orientation in the country. “This is not something that will be allowed in Nigeria,” he said, adding that the suspects would be charged in court at the end of the investigation.
