Police officer commits suicide after mistakenly killing colleague during arrest

A police officer, identified as Nelson Abuante, tragically took his own life after mistakenly killing his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, during an attempt to arrest a suspect in Rivers State.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon, December 17, at Nyogor-Lueku, in the Khana Local Government Area of the state.
The two officers, both assigned to the Taabaa Division, had been dispatched to arrest a certain Mr Akere Akpobari based on allegations levelled against him by his mother.
The situation escalated when Mr. Akere resisted arrest, prompting the two inspectors to resort to the use of force.
“In the course of the altercation, Inspector Nelson Abuante mistakenly shot Gbaramana and he sustained serious injuries. So, Abuante and Akere’s mother tried to rush the injured officer to the hospital,” a source reported.
In the ensuing altercation, Inspector Nelson Abuante accidentally discharged his weapon, striking Inspector Monday Gbaramana and inflicting serious injuries.
Subsequently, Abuante and Akere’s mother attempted to rush the injured officer to the hospital.

However, the unfortunate turn of events continued as the vehicle transporting them ran out of fuel on the way to the hospital, leading to Inspector Monday’s untimely demise.
“Immediately Abuante discovered that his colleague had died, he carried his gun and shot himself to death,” the source added.
The bodies of both officers, Inspector Monday Gbaramana and Inspector Nelson Abuante, have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, expressing their commitment to investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“Yes, the incident happened. We are investigating to unravel what really happened,” Iringe-Koko stated.
