WHO says: Covid no longer a global health emergency
Tedros Ghebreyesus, the Director General of WHO, while speaking at a media conference on Friday, said the global health body's international health regulations emergency committee decided at its 15th meeting on Thursday.
"On Thursday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that i declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. Ive accepted that adivec. it's therefore with great hope that i decaler Covid-19 over as a global health emergency," Ghebreyesus said.
On January 20, 2020, WHO declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern.
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illnesses.
